Smart Cities, AI and Machine Learning: What to do with all this data?

Round Table

ROOM: German Haus | Center Stage

Cities produce vast amounts of data. Over the years, private and public stakeholders have become very efficient at collecting and evaluating it. Yet meaningful use cases that make cities not only transparent but also smart are still far and few in between. At the same time legislators have reacted to growing privacy concerns among residents with increasingly restrictive legal frameworks. A new generation of AI and machine learning technologies may show a way toward responsible and sustainable approaches.

This round table is designed to facilitate a discussion between entrepreneurs, engineers, city planners and policy makers from Germany, the US and around the world to share good practices and use cases for AI and machine learning applications in a smart city environment. What can we do with all the data we already know how to collect? How can we improve urban living without threatening the individual’s privacy? How do we strike a balance between the interests of the business community, the administration and the private citizen? How can technology serve the citizens, especially from marginalized communities?

Short impulse presentations from various experts will start an open round table discussion and open a dialog between stakeholders. The exchange will produce a number of key recommendations and foster knowledge networks.

Gesa Ziemer, Professor, HCU Hamburg
Andreas Muth, Business Area Manager Seven Principles
Joachim Philippi, TDWI

The Future Is Not Unwritten

Film

A narrative corridor between art and science that approaches the moral renegotiation of the human being

powered by WickedWork

German Haus | Study

THE FUTURE IS NOT UNWRITTEN is a Smart Film about Artificial Intelligence and Transhumanism. An intelligent film which narrates and transforms itself endlessly, using machine learning and deep learning code. Implemented algorithms – used by GOOGLE to create AI – are utilized to explore the gigantic dimension of current developments.

Are we developing into „Übermenschen“, into „Super-Humans“ or are we getting rid of ourselves? Ethical categories or historical blueprints are missing: there is no case study on the abolition of mankind.

THE FUTURE IS NOT UNWRITTEN is an alternative contribution to this discourse. A narrative corridor between art and science that approaches the moral renegotiation of the human being.

Creative Technology Collaborations Across Verticals

powered by  WickedWork

German Haus | Main Stage

Corporations have traditionally been built upon one key product, eventually expanding their business based on that. R&D departments have been focusing on improving those existing product lines or identifying supporting business models.

This previously successful strategy has now fundamentally been changed by the rapid development of new technologies and require corporations to rethink and reinvent their business models. An influx of startups which are more flexible and able to adjust to the ever-changing environment are increasingly outperforming their corporate counterparts. While corporations have a hard time at identifying new opportunities, startups have a significant unfair advantage over corporate enterprises. They thrive in reimagining what’s possible, can get to market faster and learn faster than their heavy-weight competitors. Even if they fail at the development of a product the first time, they can still manage to pivot and get back on track. Therefore, it is essential for established enterprises to embrace external innovation and engage with entrepreneurs.

This panel of experts in emerging technologies and digital transformation will discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for successful innovation through collaborations with external forces.

Presentation & Showcase: Berlin, Sound, and a Public Institution for the Global Community

Presentation

powered by ISM in collaboration with WickedWork

German Haus | Pool Lounge

Immersive art and electronic music have emerged as interrelated forms in the public awareness, while ways in which they are presented together are rapidly evolving.

Increasing numbers of artistic works, exhibitions and installations can be found on display in traditional art spaces. This is made possible, in part, by growing support and acceptance from a wide range of galleries, museums and institutions, while technological developments in this area combined with creative thinking are leading to new initiatives.

This suggests a widespread interest in the field and increased adoption by formerly silent and motionless physical spaces to foster new experiences of sound, immersive art, and electronic music. Encouraging this paradigm shift stands as one of several causes the Institute for Sound and Music organization (Berlin ISM) has dedicated itself.

In this presentation, Meehan will highlight the significance of the ISM Exhibition Campaign, it’s relevance to Berlin, and connection to the sound community throughout the world. The technology is here, and Berlin is the right place for such an institution to flourish.

For some time now, Immersive Technology has been anticipated to be at that magical tipping point, becoming part of mainstream entertainment choices and even daily routines.

However, Immersive media is not yet as frictionless or ubiquitous as consumers want it to be, and the industry still faces a core challenge in the quest to advance immersive technology, indicating that we might not only be looking for compelling immersive content but, in fact, for the re-creation of social experiences when consuming and also producing creative content.

Our panel, featuring some of the most forward-thinking minds in the field, will explore and engage on this new frontier and discuss use cases, new hardware, and the future of audience engagement in fields as diverse as games, film, VR and mixed reality, sound and music, advertising and brand activation, or visual arts.  Let Technology step out of the way and the future of immersive experiences take center stage.

Installation: EURYDIKE

Installation

Art Installation. Music Theatre. Real Life Game. MR Experience

powered by  WickedWork

German Haus | Study

The Mixed Reality Experience EURYDIKE combines the potential of visual arts, music theatre, film, games and hightech in a virtual-analogue world to challenge current gender topics – explicitly the role of women in our hightech society. An accessible, interactive room installation – a “play mobile” on tour – as haptic venue to be explored with all senses, is therefore enhanced by Augmented and Virtual Reality techno-ogies as well as 3D sound.

Equipped with a protective suit and VR glasses, visitors dive into a retrofuturistic universe between “Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey and Clockwerk Orange” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), in which the boundaries between reality and fiction become blurred. Through the active exploration of an unknown world, a silent, speechless place is made to sound: EURYDIKE is given a voice. Each “singleplayer” alone (!) creates his or her own very personal, exclusive aesthetic-musical experience and thereby becomes an interactive part and a “play figure”: The visitors become Orpheus, the
environment EURYDIKE.

Crossing boundaries, international theatre, music and media professionals have connected with cooperation partners of various sectors to encourage a broad, sustainable discourse about gender issues, which proves its growing international relevance through different ways of radicalisation as well as through the current #MeToo debate.

EURYDIKE combines sucessfully an international audience from high culture to mainstream (ages: 18 – 75 years!) that playfully deals with a serious content. With the nominations for the German Computer Game Award (“Best Production 2018”) and the German Developer Award (“Best Innovation 2018”) EURYDIKE continues the success of the award-winning previous project O.R.PHEUS: Exclusive, interactive, immersive – always with its fingers on the pulse of the time.

Curation of events at the intersection of Creativity, Art, Science, and Technology

Expert Panel

Creating Meaningful Experiences

powered by Reeperbahn Festival Sequencer Tour and  WickedWork

German Haus | Main Stage

The nature of festivals and conferences has changed.

For centuries, festivals were created around one form of art. Conferences were mostly industry driven and consisted of one directional formats.

Those lines are blurring and people from various backgrounds with different expectations collate on events these days. Content of festive attractions are blending together with sessions of experts who are eager to sharing their knowledge. Areas are more interconnected as a whole.

However, the broad variety of people who are attending festivals and conferences today makes it difficult for curators to create satisfying experiences for everyone. Audiences expect attractions and content that transcends the traditional with the newest, most exciting advancements in entertainment, art, science, technology, and innovation.

To still stay entertaining and make knowledge sharing more accessible and relevant to people requires carefully crafted content and constant information about trends from curators.

The addition of art elements and content that features creative approaches to emerging technologies allow multiple touch points that create new integrated experiences which are much more than just a siloed experience of going to a concert or a panel discussion. Festival and conference environments who want to stay relevant need to re-invent themselves every year.

What are the hurdles and opportunities for the curation of those events?

This panel of curators who have a longstanding expertise in programming festivals at the intersection of art, science and technology will shine light on the complex process of festival curation today.

An immersive artwork by Juliana Petrozhitskaya & Andrey Vrady showcasing the dialogue between people and technology. How technology perceives human beings and how through the lens of the artist’s computational code we might look as art. It reads mimes and reactions of our guest’s faces and converts them into biometric data. In real-time, the software of the artists transforms the actual ‘mood of the visitor’ into the collective ‘mood of the festival’. Delegates and visitors of the GERMAN HAUS will see their emotions transformed into projections of lights and colors. AV MIDNIGHT – FULL IMMERSION

Keynote & Presentaion

VR-Art & the physical space

Curated by Ulrich Schrauth, Artistic Director VRHAM! Festival, Hamburg

German Haus | Pool Lounge & Gallery

Virtual Reality-Art is an emerging genre that inspires artists from diverse creative backgrounds. The visitor consistently being in the centre of the artistic experience generates new ways of engaging with art. Currently we can observe a strong trend of combining the physical experience with the virtual reality art works, either by means of complete set installations or sensory triggers. What can this expanded spectrum of opportunities mean for the artists? Does the blending of the physical and virtual space empower the experience of perception? How do VR and the physical environment correlate? During the AV-night at German House we want to explore diverse artistic VR experiences and discuss the questions about possibilities and limits.

Innovative Strategies and International Use Cases
presented by German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH New York) and Vibelab

Join us for a panel and round tables to gain insights on how cities in Europe and the US work on policies, constantly prototyping what a more collaborative, sustainable, and fair city could look like.

Modern metropolitan areas operate as vibrant 24-hour communities. From the seedy underbelly of the city, the night time economy has become a hub of for economic, cultural and technological innovation. On the 70th anniversary of Berlin becoming a 24-hour city we want to discuss with city governments, urban planners and designers, nighttime businesses, performers and communities how we can work together to create a sustainable, innovative, and safe environment. Good-practice examples from Germany, the US, and other places around the world demonstrate that a clear strategic concept for the night time economy not only helps to develop creative communities such as the music and art scenes, but also attracts skilled workers and the innovative minds that fuel startup and tech industries. Today, many cities are beginning to think strategically about night-time planning as an emerging field that looks at ways in which cities can proactively manage their night-time social, cultural and economic activities, a process that demands new leadership and increased collaboration among key stakeholders. At German Haus during SXSW we invite these stakeholders to join us for a panel and round tables to gain insights on how cities in Europe and the US work on policies and constantly prototype for what a more collaborative, sustainable and fair city could look like.

A revolutionary software that translates movement into a variety of harmonious sounds, creating a unique and interactive music experience from one performance to another. Rather than reacting to the music, the user receives instant musical responses based on their movements. This begins an exciting cycle of different sounds, which you explore with your body. You don’t dance to the music, the music dances to you. Nagual Dance puts you inside the music. It transforms your body into an instrument and each dance session into an engaging performance.

ROUNDTABLE: AI’S IMPACT ON CREATIVITY – PHANTASIA OR DYSTOPIA?

Expert Panel

Artificial Intelligence and its potential use-cases for music and creativity

curated by  WickedWork

German Haus | Main Stage

This roundtable of AI experts will explore and discuss AI’s impact on the future music ecosystem. The latest developments in A.I. are helping fuel its use in creative processes, in particular for musicians but is it really artificial when music is created by A.I. or in collaboration with A.I.? What kind of artificial intelligence could help to compose music? what part of it could be helping creative songwriters? Could A.I. help an artist to identify their most liable fans or to distribute the music to the people who will appreciate it? How much money will it make?

Leading innovators will talk about their vision of AI in the context of music and creativity, and how it could be used to enhance the creative process and influence artistry in general.

Workshop “Building music making robots” | Moritz Simon Geist

Workshop

powered by Sonic Robots in collaboration with WickedWork

German Haus | Think Tank

Join a workshop by Moritz Simon Geist, media artist and robotic musician who produced the world’s first techno record played entirely by self-made futuristic robots. Each sound on his record is played by robots. Small motors beat on metal, 3D-printed robo-kalimbas vibrate with deep bass sounds, salvaged parts from old hard drives click and cut. Over several years Moritz Simon Geist committed to build, tweak, test and play all of his DIY robotic instruments.

Moritz Geist’s ‘Sonic Robots’ push the boundaries of the imaginable and invent a new plurality in music creation. In electronic music, many imagine humans playing machines. Few imagined these music machines being actual robots. In 2012, Geist ventured into this exploration with the invention of his well-known oversized 808 robot. The MR-808 robot is an iconic drum machine gone physical, no longer dwelling in the confines of circuitry alone. In the form of a 4 by 2 meter music box, filled with mechanical parts which play the instruments live, a new idea in electro and human-machine interaction was born. Now, he goes even further to pioneer the unknown and futuristic sound world of ‘Robotic Electronic Music’.

In this workshop, Moritz will explain the technical background of his techno music robots and even gie you the chance to build your own little robot that can make music.

A Disturbing Discussion About Innovation

Expert Panel

Research Meets Artistry Meets Commercialisation

powered by  WickedWork

German Haus | Main Stage

An open discussion about the potential synergies between collaborations of researchers, artists and entrepreneur or corporate enterprises.

Technology leaves no stone unturned and artists tend to be a little more comfortable trying out new things than scientists or companies do. This often leads to artists gaining by being the first to incorporate a novel technology into their works. How can companies and entrepreneurs collaborate with artists in order to learn from their experiences with new and emerging technologies? How can research become more accessible? What are the contextual variables that can make an existing tech find new purpose and relevance, etc.

It might seem easy to look back, from the perspective of one specific successful launch of a creative tech product and find evidence of the role of successive inventions and innovations to lead to this “breakthrough”, but actually things are a lot less fluid and traceable moving forward in this relation between research/exploration, artistry and business.

Researchers, artists and innovators from a variety of areas will be talking about the promises of technology transfer as seen from universities, the reality of running a creative tech business on top of research, and the hurdles and risks for artists who are applying the unknown into their works.

Befor the roundtable starts, we are going to have a showcase of The Glad Scientist who will demo his artistc approach of using research in neuroscience for his VR + Brain Machine Interface audiovisual performance.

Blockchain For Copyright Ownership of Creative Assets

One Technology To Rule Them All?

powered by  WickedWork

German Haus | Main Stage

The new copyright legislation – which is just about to be signed by the European Parliament – will require platforms to access databases which provide reliable and current metadata of all possible content from creators across all sectors. Yes, it is as crazy as it sounds.

Even though, this is an impossible task with new content being created every second, the necessity to address and facilitate fair, speedy and transparent distribution of royalties and revenue deriving from creative content to the artists and rights owners, is undeniable.

Could decentralized technologies and networks of distributed trust – such as blockchain – finally be the game-changer and reassure accessible documentation of copyright and ownership for artists, rights owners, and their advocates, as well as licensees of content from creators?

Speakers

Roger Walco | Enjin
Saga Arvidsdotter | Mycelia Creative Passport
Shelita Burke | Pop star & Futurist
Nathalie Brähler | Creative Business University Utrecht

Moderation: John Hargrave | Mediashower

Following up on last year’s success of Music Unchained at SXSW, MusicTech Germany invites music industry professionals, developers, engineers, artists and their advocates, visionaries, and blockchain experts to s roundtable discussion centered around our ideology of Innovation Through Collaboration and focused on the impact, the decentralized technology could have on the future of the creative industries, and the music ecosystem in particular.
